From my earliest recollection, I wished to spend my life telling great stories on the stage through song. As the Festival begins its second quarter-century, and I my third, I am doing just that. All the works we give you this year are based upon literature that has shaped society’s perception of life and human behavior for four centuries.
Rossini’s most beloved opera IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA (1816) joined Mozart’s LE NOZZE DI FIGARO (1786) in criticizing the “noble” class system, which was exposed by a trilogy of plays by Pierre Beaumarchais written between 1775-92. Beaumarchais and his loveable character, Figaro, influenced the American Revolution and incited the French Revolution. We have assembled a virtuosic ensemble from around the globe to re-create that Bel Canto world at its best.
Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden (1911) is considered one of the 10 greatest books for children, a remarkable feat for a female author of the period. Made into a multitude of plays, films, and television series, THE SECRET GARDEN emerged as a hallmark of American Musical Theatre when composer Lucy Simon and lyricist Marsha Norman brought it to life in song in 1991 with a female production team. Produced originally by the Festival in 2004, it remains one of our most beloved offerings.
Amazing Grace may well be the most stirringly familiar and treasured hymn of faith throughout history. The story of its creation by John Newton (1725-1807) illuminates how an individual can bring about change, from the degradation of human bondage to freedom and redemption. Having witnessed the life-changing effect AMAZING GRACE had on the audience at the Broadway premiere in 2015, I immediately determined to bring it to Logan as soon as possible. We are pleased to be the first company outside the Broadway production (and subsequent tour) to offer this monumental tribute to the divine nature of the human spirit.

The immortal TALES OF THE BROTHERS GRIMM have examined the struggle between good and evil since 1812. Stephen Sondheim’s clever and insightfully poignant setting of the fairy tales help us see that “things are not always as they seem.” Our fanciful production, INTO THE WOODS, will delight children of all ages.
In June of 1947, Charles Schulz could not possibly have known his autobiographical character, Charlie Brown, would turn the world on its head with laughter and tears. For over half a century we viewed the world through the eyes of the “Peanuts” gang, which became the most successful comic strip of all time. My father indulged me by taking me to see Clark Gesner’s musical tale YOU’RE A GOOD MAN, CHARLIE BROWN in its original Broadway run in 1968. The characters all came to life through song. I wanted to rush home and produce it myself right then. It has taken me 50 years. As we were planning the renovation of the Utah Theatre, I kept envisioning Charlie Brown and his friends vacationing in Logan for the summer. Here they come! Don’t miss them and bring a child of any age with you.
