Utah Festival Opera & Musical Theatre is proud to sponsor the 7th Annual Utah High School Musical Theatre Awards in 2017, a musical theatre scholarship program that rewards excellence at the high school level. During the 2016-2017 school year, representatives from UFOMT will travel across the state to adjudicate high school productions. Nominated schools and artists will perform and winners will be announced at the awards ceremony Saturday, May 13, 2017. The winner of Best Actress and Best Actor will be sent to New York City to participate in the National High School Musical Theatre Awards.

The National High School Musical Theatre Awards impacts more than 50,000 students annually who participate in high school musical theater competitions sponsored by top professional theatres throughout the US. A Best Actress and Best Actor winner from each of these competitions is sent to New York for a weeklong theater intensive of coaching and rehearsals with industry professionals in preparation for a one-night-only showcase at The Jimmy™ Awards on Broadway, where a panel of judges crowns the nation’s top performers. Since its inception in 2009, the program has been the catalyst for nearly $1,000,000 in university and conservatory scholarships to be awarded to talented students at the national and local level–several of whom have already been cast in Broadway, Touring and West End productions. NHSMTA nominees will prepare for their Broadway debut during a week-long professional training intensive with NYU Tisch School of the Arts' New Studio on Broadway faculty members plus other theatre professionals. Winners will be selected by a panel of industry experts. In 2012, the program inspired preeminent broadcaster WGBH Boston to produce a 3-part documentary series called "Broadway or Bust," which follows students on a journey from their hometown competitions to their debut on Broadway. The series remains popular viewing at www.pbs.org.
